The DWP has developed an “automated Digital solution” which extends PIP awards repeatedly when they are close to ending if a review has still not been completed, a government minister has revealed this week.

Chloe Smith, minister for disabled people, disclosed the existence of the automated system in response to a parliamentary question about how many PIP claims are extended more than once.

Although Smith said that the figures for the number of claimants whose awards have been repeatedly extended was not available, she did admit that it was happening.

She told MPs:

“To protect PIP customers, we have developed an automated Digital solution which essentially extends the current award for cases where there is a risk that the claim will fall out of payment.

“As we see continuing high demand for PIP new claims, customers are currently waiting longer than expected to have their claim reviewed, which has led to some awards being extended more than once.”

Have you had your PIP award extended because a review has still not been carried out?  Let us know in the comments section below.

My review was March 2022, however i got a letter and a phone call saying that because i had to have a f2f assessment and they could not set a date, that my review would be before June 2022.  Since then i have had a text to say that they are still awaiting the "Face 2 Face" assessment appointment but that they would keep me informed and to let them know of any changes in circumstances.  However, the changes in circumstances are what has caused the F2F assessment review in the first place and they have not asked the doctors for further reports regarding the changes..

Hi .  I Was recieving full mobility alongside standard living pip. I applied for a change of circumstances as I was finding some daily chores at home were getting harder for me achieve. I did this with the help of the ' DAB' in Ipswich. Who I might add are  fantastic at their jobs. It was a while before I heard anything. However, a letter came confirming that I had been awarded the higher rate living allowance. (No telephone or face to face assessment) . Plus my awards on both parts had been extended to 2028 . Nice to get some good .  Thank you DAB Ipswich

Out of the blue received a letter from DWP my lower award had been awarded for a further eight years. No other paperwork or explanation. I was relieved however as I was due my third interview in six years. Although awarded three years each time was always called in at the end of the second year for interview.

Hello. I recently spent the usual 2-3 months coming near to breakdown while filling in my expected review (for the over 70"s) - which I can only EVER do with constant reference to all your wonderful and comprehensive guides, for which I am and will be forever so very grateful - only to have my award unexpectedly extended before I had sent mine off.  (It says to be reviewed again in the same time period as last, but they suggested the same thing may happen as now).

It was and remains the most wonderful surprise and relief. I only wish they could let us know first, and save 2-3 months of non stop, stressful, ill making, frightened work!    Hope this is helpful.

Words will never suffice for how grateful I have been over these untold years, for your reviews, guides, researches, advice, suggestions, and for just being there on our side, fighting our corner, and supporting all our vulnerable predicaments. Thank you to each and every one of you, from my very grateful heart, always.

I was not informed at all of extention,i filled in a review form last June buti had to phone them as my husband recieved a letter to say his carers allowance that he receives for me was ending as i no longer qualified for pip i spent over an hour waiting on the phone to pip to be told it would be extended but they couldnt give me a date as to when it would be extended till and to phone back the week after which i did and had to spend another hour waiting to speak to someone they said it had stopped but they would go and speak to case manager and phone me back which they did and they said it had been sorted and payments had been restarted but they had no end date as they would carry on paying me till myreview has been looked at. My husbands carers allowance for me has been stopped and i have phoned them twice now and been told it would be sorted but it still hasnt been so we are now struggling as the carers helps pay for things we need to buy.

I do not trust any of the HCP's to tell the truth on an assessment report...

I am still waiting on my PIP review, and I am scared what's going to happen, as last time , my review happend it was just before COVID 19 in January 2019..... The HCP who did the assessment at my home wrote a load of lies on my report, and they cut my money off without telling me, abruptly in March 2019...!! I had to fight to get it reinstated...!! Then when it was re- instated, they told me I couldn't have the "mobility element " - because I drive my own car to do shopping.....!!!  I phoned Capita, who did the assessment, and the supervisor of the HCP, said she could not alter what was in the report...!! And that it would stay as written - even though my own brother was present at the assessment, and i nearly fell and hit my head on the fireplace in my living room....!! None of this was in the report...!!! So, my character, and illnessess, were not truthfully conveyed in the health report...

@LJ Maddison This is why all assessments should be recorded!! Then you have proof if you need to go to a Tribunal

Yes, my award was extended for a year during lockdown, which I thought was fair enough in those circumstances, even though my mobility issues had worsened. If they extend it again, I shall have to ask them specifically to look at it again with an assessment, because of the mobility problems I'm having. In my opinion I do now qualify for PIP mobility, although it was turned down last time I had an assessment.

First sent a letter in Oct 21 saying extended by 12mths replaced my blue badge at cost of £10 only to find out that that also was only for 12 mths.. In Jan 22 I received another letter telling me that my pips had been extended indefinitely GREAT but now blue badge scheme tell me I’ve got to pay another £10 to extend it to 3 yrs.
Stil look on the positive side my pips has been extended indefinitely the same as my original DLA entitlement. Fingers crossed now that it means what it says.

I needed the letter for blue badge renewal so DWP sent a covering letter stating my award has been extended until June 2023 so my blue badge was only given until that date too, meaning I will need to pay again come next year for a further badge!

I was sent a letter stating my PIP was extended for an extra year and I would receive forms June this year to complete for review next May!

I had a letter to say my payments were extended by nearly 4 months to the end of May , only if they hadn’t sorted my claim before then . From phone assessment to decision it took less than 2 weeks , was sorted end of April

Reading a lot of the comments below and it is really quite frightening what is actually going on at DWP. There is no organisation and the situation is out of control. Our PIP reviews/assessments are more or less a lottery, one assessor will have a totally different view from another.
The assessor lied on my application but nothing was done about it, despite my protests.
If I had lied I would have been charged with fraud.
The previous conservative governments have caused this chaos and the existing one is as functional as the Keystone Cops.
In typical Boris style, he and his fellow spivs, keep sweeping everything under the carpet.
Right now, the treatment of people who are seriously ill, along with those that are disabled, is the last thing on this government's mind.

@Joseph Here, here , you are completely correct.... !!! The same thing happened to me, in January 2019.... I had to wait 3 months to get to see my health report... And what the health assessor had put was mostly supposition, and made up dialogue, of things I was supposed to have said... It amounts to "defamation of character" - I wanted it put right, but , the assessors supervisor said "what is in the report cannot be changed"...!!! I was furious...!! The HCP did not even acknowledge that my brother was present at the assessment...!!! What a  load of liars they are....!!  The person who did the assessment was meant to be a 'professional' as well, A Nurse... !!!!
