We are making some changes to the Benefits and Work forum as a result of the increasingly complex queries we are receiving.

The forum is only intended as additional support for the issues that the site itself deals with:  AA, DLA, PIP and the WCA.  It’s provided as a courtesy to members, as long as we have volunteers to staff it.

Unfortunately, and entirely understandably, as a result of the forced migration of ESA claimants to UC, the forum is receiving many more enquiries about a range of issues relating to UC.  These sometimes involve calculations of how much UC should be in payment or which UC elements a claimant should be entitled to.

These are questions that are far outside the purpose for which the site exists.

The unfortunate result is that the moderators are being overwhelmed with posts which only some have the knowledge to deal with and those moderators are not always available.

It also makes it much harder to recruit moderators, as members may feel they have to have expert knowledge of all aspects of UC in order to contribute.

So, we have now appointed a volunteer Forum Moderator, whose role is to check for posts which fall outside the site remit.  These will still be published, but without any answer by a moderator.

Instead there will be a brief explanation of why an answer cannot be given.  Other members will still be free to respond to these posts if they feel they can make a helpful contribution.

We hope that readers will understand the reason for these changes and, if any readers have a good knowledge of any of the issues the site deals with – you might be good on PIP but not the WCA or vice versa, for example - and would like to consider becoming a moderator, please do get in touch.

Totally understand this decision as frustrating as it is for everyone, loads of advice looking back through information.

I have emailed you to express interest in being a moderator due to having a wide range of knowledge within the benefit system and also working with benefit claimants in the past

We can see the day coming when an AI will be giving the advice!

Hello everyone... I have been associated with this site for a few years, and my personal journey with pip claim, and appeal and tribunal, were conducted both with advice from this site, and Citizens Advice Bureau...
My local, part time office was instrumental in my eventual success. While I cannot vouch for other offices, a trip to see them, or phone call to make an appointment, or an email can open many doors.
Specifically... UC claims are dealt with all the time, and experience is usually up to date.
Help filling in forms, online applications, queries regarding progress all fall within their daily work.
Advice on medical proof of illness, or other inability to work, since their endgame in benefits calculation is to get you to work, is available freely.
I wish you all success, and I am a recipient of this newsletter, so I will offer advice where I think I can help.
My advice to everyone struggling with benefits is this... Get official help, C.A.B., MP local office, easily found on the internet, Solicitors, some of whom do free advice, check websites for local people...
But ABOVE ALL NEVER GIVE UP... Your life is worth the effort...

I would be interested in volunteering with you but would need access to training if available.  I have personal experience of the benefit system as I had to retire from nursing due to health issues

@Gilliany I too would be interested in volunteering... My experience and hard won benefits stand me in good stead, but I would need training... Unable to travel far, this would need to be internet based, or in Norwich.
My details are known to you...
      Pleased to help...

It is not entirely clear that the proposed approach would achieve the intended saving of time.

I can totally understand why you are making this decision. Unfortunately you can not cover everything and if you tried to without knowing the subject's well then all advice would not be so good. You are human and as such carry-on doing what you do deal with and understand really well. I do appreciate all that you have done with your advice and help with the claim forms.

This is no doubt in part down to the campaign spear-headed by "Max". They want to shutdown all advice and/or support claimants get, as they consider shut help as "gaming the system".

Sorry that there have been these difficulties with moderating the site. Thank you for all the hard work you put into keeping us informed.

Can you let us know what is happening about up and down thumbs? Is their removal  a permanent part of the change to the forum?  If I had a vote I would keep the up thumbs and remove the down ones. As it stands it feels as though it's lost a lot of its vitality sadly.

@CaroA @CaroA, @Ala Thumbs up to that! I quite enjoyed the down votes, but would prefer if people explained them.

@CaroA I agee, is nice to know, you not alone, and have others support.  Thumbs up or down, sometimes is and answer on its own.  Without it just doesn't feel right.    Little interaction is a nice thing.
