Leaving deferred pension until state pension age (normal pension age is 65) was created by janerg63
Hi,
I would be really grateful for some advice please. I currently get Universal Credit and PIP and am 62. I have a fairly small pension pot which is a deferred defined benefit pension from a divorce settlement - it will be payed monthly when I do receive it. The normal pension age for this pension is 65 but as I had seen information regarding being able to defer pensions until state pension age (67 in my case) and it not impacting on universal credit I did ask the pension company about taking the pension from 67 instead of 65. I was advised I would receive a lump sum for the 2 years I deferred the pension at the time the payments start if I do request payment from age 67 . When I receive my state pension and the defined benefit pension I won’t be eligible for pension credit but I did wonder if there could be any problem with me deferring my pension and getting the lump sum at 67. I believe, from what I have read, this would be following the UC rules as I did see a post saying the DWP are not interested in pensions for the purpose of UC unless they are already being paid or you are at state pension age - I would be really grateful to know if that is correct in this case or if there could be any issue with mine being a deferred defined benefit pension and with 2 years pension arrears being paid at age 67. Many thanks in advance for any advice Jane

Hi janerg63
I am not qualified to give financial advice about pensions. But you are correct in your understanding of the UC rules regarding deferred pensions.

Hi David, thank you so much for your response. I was not looking for financial advice -sorry if you thought I was - I must admit my query wasn’t very concise! I just wanted to check that, within universal credit rules, there would be no issue in me waiting until I am state pension age to start receiving payments from my pension as I did not want any issues but it sounds like that is fine. Thanks again Jane

Hi janerg63
Thanks for the update and deferring your private pension will be fine for UC purposes.
