''My sales for the year were £189, and my purchases £281.''

Interesting, that I got it wrong. Our brains can be real tricksters. I think the terminology used confused me, for 'purchases' are more commonly referred to as 'cost', in self-employment. 'Purchases' is a more general term. If I were asked 'how much has your purchase (purchases?) been for this year?' in relation to my self-employment, I would probably go 'uh?'.

But yeah, my mistake.

Hi Invisible

UC operates a completely different accounting system to that of the HMRC so you cannot make direct comparisons. There is further information here :-

Hi David,

actually they seem to me to be pretty much the same, at least for the self employed. What would be some of the differences?

HMRC has a lot more questions in the self-assessment that I don't think the DWP asks, for example, 'have you given to charity during the tax year', etc, but all it really boils down to me, I think, at least for the DWP is this:

did I made a profit for a sale? have I declared this income to the DWP? do I have evidence that shows the cost and the sale?

and if I did not made a profit, have I declared the sale as capital?

Would you not agree?

I mean, let's face it: the UC Journal is quite impressive. In the past we had to send tracked letters, wait ages on the phone, go through hoops just to interact with the DWP at all.....now it's as easy as pressing a couple of buttons on your computer.

There's no excuse.......one can never go wrong by declaring, only by not doing it.

Hi Invisible

You will find the details in the guide below. There are differences with UC and HMRC regarding expenses and capital allowances and treatment of assets.
