Southend council are saying transitional benefits in an income was created by mikesimms
Like a lot of people migrating from ESA to University Credit, my brother has been his with a £260 bill for council tax increase, Southend council are taking Transitional protection as an income, and adding this to the council tax relief.
I was told they should not do this? A consultation on the phone and they are saying they are right.?
On a side note Transitional protection should really cover the council tax increase, as you worse off.

Hi mikesimms
Unfortunately it is correct, the same goes for claimants awarded the LCWRA element, like they say, what you get in one hand is taken away from the other.

Telford and Wrekin council did the same to me when I transitioned from ESA to UC, I get the severe disability transistional payment so the money coming in is exactly the same as it was before, but without the Council Tax reduction I was having to find an additional £164 a month !! 😱
I contacted the council who told me that ESA was a passport Ed benefit and UC isn’t. I wrote to my MP who gave me the same reply and suggested I apply for the hardship allowance which I did. I still haven’t heard back from them but mysteriously the council stopped taking the council tax from my direct debit with them (after a month where they only took £80). I know that there are reviews on the lawfulness of treating migrated disabled as the same as those able to work.
