UC and Appointee advice

Thanks David. I think i'd have managed better with the UC had I been involved from the start. I'm sure things must have been explained at those early job centre meetings that I missed.
My son lacks capacity - i don't think the support worker realised how low his comprehension is.

When i opened up the claimant commitments done by my son, he had incorrectly stated he's got a partner (never having been on a date!) and he had £6 savings!

He just makes things up!

Fortunately, i did manage to secure just about the last appt the job centre had in March 2020 to correct everything.

As far as i was concerned, that was everything corrected and done. Of course, going into lockdown and my son being in LCWRA meant we never heard from the JC again.

I had totally failed to appreciate that UC is an ever shifting benefit and i should have been in the journal checking statements, updating capital and keeping on top of things.

If he ever claims again, i will know what to do - but if he moves out of our home, i will be only too happy to hand over to the council!

I have never had a problem with DLA or PIP. Now he is on ADP and that is going smoothly too. But UC is a very different beast.

Hello,

Thank you all for all this interesting and useful information. Sometimes it seems as if we're fighting a losing battle on all fronts when we try to advocate for our adult children, who often seem determined to sabotage our efforts themselves! My son will agree he can do anything anyone in authority asks him to and I am then seen as the person trying to exercise coercion when I attempt to correct these assumptions. He, too, will "make things up" because he just says the first thing that comes into his head when questioned by anyone, in the hope that the questioning will stop. I worry constantly about the future, but at the same time, the idea of handing the problems over to someone else often seems very tempting, if only I could be sure they would offer the right support.

Best wishes to you all,

Wendy Woo

Thanks David,

I sent the message as you advised. They cancelled the meeting but they haven't provided an update or anything yet.

I'm assuming they're investigating or something? Hoping that's the end of it.

Hi TheironTark

When somebody makes a mistake in the DWP it is described as a " training need ".
Hopefully you will get the appointeeship confirmed soon.
