my son is moving to a different area due to elderly parents to ill to manage was created by carol Ashton Farrell
Good morning our son is 44 and was born with severe learning disabilities and has a disability , he has worked 12 hrs a week at local company for last 24 years, and was paid for this, He receives pip and ESA is in a support Group and has been supported by us since birth and still live at home near Lancaster.
Due to the fact we are now unable to cope due to ill health and having disabilities and being 83 and 70 yrs old,
The time has come to relocate Michael near to his only next of kin which is his brother and family that live in Cheltenham, we have manage to obtain a rented property for him near to his brother ad have been referred to social care at Cheltenham from social care here, with a meeting arranged with them for the 10th of January 2025. That is social worker and enablement team to help him find work of 12 hours of paid work as before.
As you can imagine this is a huge challenge for him and my Son who has a wife and family of his own.
We need to get everything in place as soon as possible to make the transition smooth and not upset his mental health further and hopefully his future to be settled and supported.
we know he will need a care package for meal times and support and we also know he will need Assistance with paying his rent and Poll Tax can you advise or help in anyway the best way to change his benefit's to what he needs please , he moves in 3rd of January , My son is happy to support my youngest son as much as he can and be his appointee or even guardian and is also guarantor for my sons rented property, we have been told he will eventually have to claim universal credit at present we are having to pay his rent and upfront down payment looking for second hand furniture to furnish the property but can not sustain the payment for rent for long as our savings to support ourselves will soon be gone. we have found the benefits forms a minefield for years but changing them to suit his new life is and all the changes in benefits themselves is overwhelming to say the least.
would be so grateful of any assistance or advice , many thanks

Hi Carol Ashton Farrell,
Firstly it is recommended for internet security reasons that you do not use your real name as a user name on the forum.
I would have thought the social worker would have helped with his State Benefits. If not I would advise phoning the Citizens Advice Help to Claim phone number and use their assistance in making his Universal Credit claim.

When your son moves to Cheltenham his ESA won't stop automatically but will be replaced with UC when he makes his UC claim for rental housing costs. However his PIP will remain the same.
If you are his appointee then you may wish to get that changed to his brother but that will need an interview from a DWP Visiting Officer.
Help with the rent will be through UC but will be capped at the local LHA rate for Cheltenham.

You will have to apply to the Council for help with Council Tax via their Council Tax Reduction scheme.
Hope this helps,
David
