Problem proving identity for UC was created by Faith
Hi,
I am currently in the Support Group of ESA. Today I received the letter from the DWP, telling me I have to apply for UC.
I am worried it will be impossible for me to prove my identity. As both of my parents are from the USA, I only have an American passport, even though I was born in the UK, and have lived here my whole life. Equally problematic is that my passport is 30 years old, and therefore expired. A few years ago, I looked into applying for a British passport (as I do have dual citizenship) but, because of my unusual circumstances, the application process was too complex and difficult for me to manage, with my severe health issues. I have no drivers license. I have my birth certificate but no valid photo ID.
Has anyone managed to prove their identity, for UC, without any photo ID?
Trying not to panic.
Many thanks, in advance, for any info or suggestions.

Hi Faith,
Post approved - hopefully someone can assist you with this, but I'd imagine most people these days have either a driving license, whether provisional or full, and/or a passport. I'm not sure of any other way of proving your identity, other than for you to maybe see via this link if any of the options can help you:

Hi Faith,
Considering your circumstances I would contact the Citizens Advice Help to Claim service. Their phone number is on page 2 of your Managed Migration letter. They have a contract with the DWP to assist claimants move from the old Legacy Benefits to UC. They have assisted several of our members. Have a read of the recommendation from this forum member VIA.

Hi Faith,
You can also have your ID verified for UC purposes by what is called a Biographical Test. You could talk to Citizens Advice Help to Claim about that .

Hi. I don't have a driving licence or passport and have looked this up. There are a number of other documents you can take, such as rental, bank cards are also accepted as a form of ID, or a P60. If they still aren't happy, they can do a biographical check where they phone you (or see you in person) and ask you questions recorded on their system that only you would know.
Hope this help, it is all online if you search acceptable forms of ID.
