Are students entitled to ESA? was created by ELEANOR
My 19-year-old daughter is doing a full-time Art Foundation course. She cannot apply for financial help from the Student Loan Company and so has no income at all. She suffers from a rare, incurable and untreatable gastric condition called Slow Whole Gut Transit. Everything she eats cause her pain and she has a very restricted diet. At the moment all she can tolerate are mangoes and orange juice. She eats and drinks such large quantities that it is costing is nearly £1,000 a month. She is too ill at the moment to attend college but, as a full-time student, she is not available for work. Can she claim ESA?

She will only be able to claim ESA(CB) if she has sufficient NI Contributions from working and ESA(IR) if she also receives DLA or PIP, see the following for more information and links.

As an aside. If she is on a recognised dietry food she may well get help financially via her GP.
as mangoes and oranges are relatively cheap and is all she consumes, costs seem a little excessive.
With a gut problem the acid in such fruit as an only intake would damage the linings of the stomach.
