Obtaining DWP permission to drawdown overpayments

Has anyone had any experience of the DWP agreeing or turning down drawdowns from overpayments made to a flexible mortgage (overpayments which the claimant has made)?
Does anyone know what criteria the DWP use to decide?
Background: I told both DWP and my mortgage provider about the likely drawdowns in April/May, neither mentioned I’d need DWP permission, so I went ahead with home adaptations (which the drawdowns would partly cover) and now my mortgage provider tells me I need DWP permission before the mortgage provider will pay me over half of my drawdown request.
I’ve raised a complaint with the mortgage provider, and have asked the DWP for permission. Whilst I wait to hear from the DWP, I'm deeply concerned about what the outcome is likely to be.

Unless one of our members has experience of this then I am afraid we cannot help.

I would recommend that you get face to face advice from a trained advisor.

Where to get advice?

Sorry, but after over 30 years in welfare rights I've never heard of a 'drawdown' and searching for it revealed no definitive results with several search engines.

Gordon has quite correctly advised that you seek face to face advice from a trained adviser.

However, as I'm a trained adviser but know nothing about this, I rather suspect other trained advisers would be in the same boat, but it's always worth trying.

I'd recommend that you deal directly with the DWP on this, as they will have guidance on this in their Blue Volumes of Social Security Law.

My son had an option on his mortgage where when so much capital had been repaid, he could then drawdown an amount of money for whatever use. This amount would be limited so the original amount borrowed would not be exceeded. His mortgage payments stayed the same. It just meant the capital to pay back obviously went back up everytime he drewdown an amount.
Hope that helps.

Thank you for thinking about this, and for replying, Gordon. The one advisor I've so far managed to contact looked into it and wasn't able to find anything about the DWP/building society link-up. I'm trying to obtain help from another.

Dear Jim
Thank you for sharing this. It’s well worth knowing that it may be difficult to obtain information and guidance on this. I hadn’t heard of the Blue Volumes before, so thank you for letting me know that they exist! And even if I don’t find an advisor who knows about this issue, I’ll learn at some stage where my existing direct approach to the DWP leads.
However, if anyone else reading this has had any experience of flexible mortgage drawdowns, and being required to obtain DWP approval, I’d love to read what your experience was!
Thank you again Jim!
