ESA transitional payment was created by Charlie11
When I migrated from Incapacity Benefit to ESA WRAG (contribution based) I was advised that I would receive a top up payment resulting in my money remaining the same which was the case. I was also advised that I would not receive any increase in my money until the ESA amount had reached the same level as the amount I was receiving in Incapacity Benefit.

I was therefore under the impression that my money would remain the same for quite a number of years.

I was in receipt of ESA (conts based) for one year then had to apply for Income Related ESA. I received a letter confirming that I was entitled to the full Income Relation ESA payment however the top had been removed resuliting in my payments being reduced by £10.70 per week.

Could you please advise if this reduction is correct or should I question this change?

I am afraid this is quite likely to be correct, your switching to ESA(IR) will have been counted as a Change of Circumstances and therefore caused a calculation of your benefits from scratch.

However, you are also now eligible for any means tested benefits such as free prescriptions and dental care, and may also qualify for other benefits that you could not claim while only receiving ESA(CB), so it would be worth using one of the online benefit calculators to see what else may be paid. I would also suggest you speak to a trained advisor as they may also be able to make some recommendations.

Hi C,

It appears that Gordon is correct, as you were not entitled to IS pre conversion to ESA, and were entitled to CB ESA only, any TP addition payment would also have come under CB ESA.

As the CB ESA in The WRAG is time limited to 365 days, and your assessment and entitlement to IR ESA would be classed as a change in circumstances, you would lose the CB TP addition.

Gordon is right, as you are now in reciept of IR ESA, this may passport you to other benefits, such as HB, CT Support, free prescriptions, eye tests and dental care.

This : Benefits Calculator may give you some idea.
