Querying the role of carers in WRA and the WP

· Would my carer be able to accompany me to a WFI?
· Would my carer be permitted or indeed expected to join me in Work Related Activity?
· Would my carer be permitted/expected to join me at Work Programme inductions and placements?
My carer has stated that she is not prepared to help the DWP wreck what little physical capacity I retain. Moreover, I am concerned about her health- she is beyond the current state retirement age. Without my carer’s car, I could not travel to the nearest JobCentre Plus for a WFI.
My situation is not unique. What sort of role does the DWP expect of a disabled person’s carer in WRA/WP?

There is certainly no reason why your carer should not attend a WFI with you, although you should notify the JC+ in advance so ensure that there is adequate room.
However, as to there joining you in WRA or WP activities, I think this is very unlikely to be possible, they can obviously transport you to and from these activities, but as the DWP often pays a third party to provide the WRA and WP services, I do not think they will pay for another person to participate, of course I could be wrong.

1. If my carer were willing to transport me and remain present would this be permitted?
2. If my carer refused to support the DWP in pushing my body beyond its capacity what would happen? Would the DWP provide transport and and alternative carer with sufficient knowledge of my condition?

MariW wrote: I think I’ve caused some confusion. Sorry, Gordon. My carer would not expect/want to be paid by the DWP. I could not reach a WRA/WP placement without my carer or get through the required time period without the support she provides. My questions are:
1. If my carer were willing to transport me and remain present would this be permitted?
2. If my carer refused to support the DWP in pushing my body beyond its capacity what would happen? Would the DWP provide transport and and alternative carer with sufficient knowledge of my condition?
1. It is entirely dependant on the activity, for example if you were having a meeting with your WP advisor then there would probably be no problem, but at the opposite end of the spectrum, if you are mandated to perform voluntary work, there would clearly be issues.
2. The DWP are not responsible for your care needs, see below.
The important thing for to remember is that the DWP advisor must take into account any limitations that result from your condition(s) when deciding what Work Related Activity should do, if you believe that the activities that they are asking you do are beyond your capabilities then you should talk to your advisor about it, and if necessary, escalate it to their supervisor.
