PIP Face to Face worries was created by Kaydee
Hi
I have now got a date for my F2F with ATOS re my PIP application which is in two weeks time.
Firstly, the centre I have to attend is over 13 miles away in another town, I can’t use public transport so my wife will have to take the day off work and take me. Maybe there isn’t much I can do about that, but my main concern is the consultation itself. Apart from depression, I have severe COPD and get breathless very easily, I simply can’t do many of the day to day things that others take for granted, even bending over makes me breathless.
I am really worried that the HCP will ask me to do things that I wont be able to do, or will cause me to get breathless. Can I decline to do something the HCP might ask me to do? I would really like to hear from someone on the forum who has been through this and who has a similar or the same condition as me.

You can certainly refuse to do any task that you are asked to do, but unlike DLA which refers to severe discomfort, there is no equivalent measure defined for PIP so you need to explain in detail why you are refusing.

I am afraid PIP is too new for us to have any detailed view of the assessment process, as far as I know only a few of our members have applied for PIP, so far and I am not sure that any of them have been assessed yet. This is echoed on other forums in the comments being made, my expectation is that the assessments will at the very least follow a script, they may be computer controlled, and claimants will not necessarily be asked direct questions about their conditions, much as in an ESA assessment.

Goodluck !! my assessment is with Capita in a few weeks an all and I have to travel over 50 miles, as they have not employed anyone in my city! The person at Capita told me they just have a talk with you and ask how about your day to day life and what difficulties you experience. Hope you get PIP , am as nervous as you and I also need to get someone to take me down, as I have trouble driving with ankles deciding to lock at any time! keep us posted

Hi w,

50 miles either way is an awfully long haul, are you able to undertake a 100 miles round trip ?

I know with the ESA WCA, that a claimant would not be expected to travel more than 90 minutes either way, to an Assessment Centre.

Have you thought of contacting Capita, to see whether they can carry out a Home Assessment ?

It is not your fault that Capita do not have an Assessment Centre nearer to you.

Hi bro58
Thanks for your advice and the link to ATOS, I hadn't realised there was a website.

waqqy, good luck on your consultation, it helps to know I'm not the only nervous one. My date is for the 10th Sept in the afternoon, I'll post on here that evening if I can to let you know how it went and what I had to do.
Thanks
