PIP claim advice was created by angelcake
Hi there,

I would really appreciate some advice this afternoon if at all possible.

What has happened is I'm trying to complete my PIP form.

I couldn't make the deadline due to my health problems and they gave me an extra two weeks.

I later informed them I was struggling to make that and she said that if they receive it by tomorrow 30th then it should be ok, as they probably won't look at my case till then but she would put it on my notes that I'm returning it by the 30th so it would be up to the decision maker.

It has been very stressful and causing me a lot of anxiety as I suffer with fatigue motivation anxiety etc and it has been very difficult even attempting to complete the form. However, I have started but it is making me very panicky that I am running out of time as it has to be in the post by today.

So I will probably be able to complete the form but the problem is the addition info I want to write myself.

So I don't know whether to send the form off with some brief notes in the boxes and forward on my additional notes.

Or do my best with the addtional info and send it off with the form but send an updated version of additional when I've finished.

I'm waiting for medical evidence that I will be sending on when it's ready.

Obviously I want to be happy that I've thoroughly covered everything but panicking as I'm running out of time.

Other option is to ring again and say it is going in post tomorrow but I really don't want to risk them closing the case and then having to wait a long time again to get a new form.

Also my transfer assessment date from IB to ESA i begins mid sept - I asked the job centre. So ideally I'd like my PIP to be looked at ASAP to take the pressure off a bit with the ESA.

On the PIP I see there is about 12 descriptors and you need 8 points to qualify - could you telll me how may descriptors you need to qualify for?

Also in the PIP guide on the % of how often I don't understand how you do this on the form as there is nothing to ask how often in terms of % or days etc?

Thank you

It is really important that you return the IP Claim form by the 30th, unlike DLA where the late return of a form meant that the start date would be adjusted, with PIP; the likelihood is that they will close your claim and you will have to start again from scratch.

If you are unable to complete it then I would write a covering letter to explain this and that you will forward the additional information as soon as possible, which of course you will need to do.

In terms of qualifying, there are 10 descriptors that cover you care needs and 2 that cover mobility, you need to score a total of 8 points across descriptors 1-10 for the Standard Care award (12 for the Enhanced), and a total of 8 points across 11-12 for Standard Mobility award (12 for the Enhanced).

I hope you have been using out PIP Claim guide

Hi ac,

Just to add to Gordon's good advice, there is more details on when a descriptor should apply to a claimant, (percentage wise) on Page 17 of the PIP Guide that Gordon has provided the link to.

Thanks Gordon and Bro58.

Yes I am using the guide thanks and I got the form off today as you advised and attached a covering letter about the additional info to follow.

What I don't understand on the form is they ask to tick yes no or sometimes and I have ticked sometimes for most. I don't know how they interpret this in terms of % and am I supposed to be talking about it in terms of % or saying sometimes, frequently most days etc. I don't really know how to best write it and describe.

thanks

Sometimes means that you have difficulty with a task some of the time but not all of the time. You need to explain when you have a problem, how frequently and for how long, and also why you have the variability.

For it to be considered the problem needs to exist for the majority of the time i.e. more than 50 percent, so that it 4 out of 7 days a week, more than 12 hours a day or 8 hours out of the waking day of 16 hours (adjust as relevant). Try to use specific figures where ever you can rather than using phrases like "frequently" which may be misinterpreted and try and give examples of why you have a problem.

So for example you might write; I can only perform activity A for one hour a day due to severe pain in my hands that is the result of my Arthritis, and at most three days a week with a days rest in between to allow my hands to recover.

Hi Gordon,

Thank you that makes it a bit clearer.

Sometimes my health problems can affect me everyday of the week and sometimes less than 50%. My condition is very hard to predict from one week to the next and it usually comes in phases. This can be for many weeks but I'm not sureo why it is this way so it makes it difficult to describe. The severity can also vary and there is no specific pattern to this.

So at worst I would qualify but other weeks I would not - so how is it best to describe this?

Many thanks

Andrea
