ESA - what do these mean? was created by del
Reading over ESA85A medical report, and there are two listings which I do not understand and would like to know if anyone knows what questions on the new ESA50 or descriptors they relate to severe problems with?

1 "Transferring"

2 " Physical Personal Action"

Does the report go into any more detail about these two phrases?

Are they prefixed by a code; S(a) for example?

I have had a look in the WCA Handbook and cannot find an exact match for either of these, my best guess for the first is Question 2 Standing and Sitting which also asks about whether you can transfer from one seat to another.

As to the second, I am going with Question 13, Initiating Personal Action, but there is no requirement for this to be physical so this may be a red herring.

Report does not go into detail other than to describe as severe. I think you are correct about it being transferring from one seat to another. I cannot find anything else that would relate to transferring.

Personal action, think I have got this one  Some of my physical symptoms lead to reduction in mental function. For example my severe physical fatigue and exhaustion leads to reduced mental function. Well it would appear to me that is common sense but those and such as those appear to think otherwise. Lesson learned make it extremely clear and in simple terms that your physical conditions impact on your mental, cognitive state. Do not take it for granted even though you have stated how it affects cognitive function that it will be classed as mental :(

 I think those and such as those are throwing the red herrings!

The January 2013 changes to the ESA regulations means that a claimant should not expect to score points for a physical problem that is caused or exacerbated by a Mental Health issue or for a Mental Health issue caused or made worse by a physical problem.

There is no definitive list of how the DWP see any particular condition and our advice is to complete the ESA50 irrelevant of the restriction, but claimants should take into account that they may not score points now, that they have previously been able to rely on.

Completing forms is becoming more and more difficult and it appears to me that we all have to think very carefully before completing the forms as regards our health. I'm thinking best to say physical affects me because....... and then next paragraph mental affects me because......... so as all loopholes are covered. Might take longer but at least everything is individually covered.

I do not understand how they can say that mental doesn't affect physical or physical doesn't affect mental when in the Equality Act 2010, D15, Page 38 it refers to such problems. I know D15 should be read in conjunction with the entire document but it is all so confusing.
