Crikey,

An AFPS pension of less than £3.00 per week is almost impossible, as if under AFPS 75 one had to do a minimum of 2 years qualifying service to qualify for any pension (unless medically discharged). If less than 2 years qualifying service pension payments are refunded less any payments necessary to 'contract back in' to the state system. Any 'Boy Service' under 18 years in the ranks or Commissioned Service under 21 years not being qualifying service - it still rankles losing just over a years qualifying service before my 21st birthday!.

The lowest I have ever seen was around £20 per week which was for a Private with 2 years and 33 days service, preserved for 2 years before permanent incpacity. It used to rise by RPI (or CPI or this year no increase!) annually in April based on the preceeding Septembers inflation rate however there is much angst amongst the ex service organisations regarding the changes to this system.

It was not £3 a week my sums where £3 out unless you went out early the average minimum time would be 6 years service and so the sum would be 6/37 of the pension,, for some one going out at 55 then add the index link for september from date out till sep 2009 then add CPI from sep 2010 to amount and for lump sum time new amount by 3 :)

the starting figuer for the sum is the numbers given on the letter given on discharge or last pay slip less resetlement pay or allowances if on slip

Hi Dave/Pete et all
I have Just been Awarded A Preserved Pension on the grounds "become permanently unable to work full time due to ill-health" attributable to service

So i have been paid a lump sum of £4500 and £1500 a year pension (all tax free)(6 years of service)

The main question is that i get full council tax benefit
Incapacity benefit is counted as income but brings me below the yearly personal allowance but with the one off payment now takes me over the threshold
So could you please help in how the above affects the council tax benefit system ie do i have to inform them?,start paying council tax? etc

Regards Nik

it depends on council you need to talk to them, I am not sure what you mean the pension should not be counted as income my service and war pension are ignored, as both awarded for ill health

do you mean the lump sum added to savings you have now ? that might be ignored for 12 months
