Take a look at the Guide 'Understanding Employment & Support Allowance' in particular page 26.

Thank you, just had a quick read and what jumped out was that your partner must not be receiving Pension credit, that point becomes interesting due to the increase in female pension age and at present males ie husbands can claim pension credit from age 60 still. In my case that knocks me out of ESA income based.

My husband has just been for an assessment, got 30 points and told he is in the work related activities group. He did not have an additional test and has not been told he will need one - I am so confused by the whole thing.

Sorry to confuse you Diane. The ESA medicals are a two-in-one test. First you get tested to see if you have limited capacity for work. If you pass this test you get assessed for limited capacity for work-related activities. You have to pass this second test to get placed into the support group and it is all carried out within the same medical. This should not be confused with the Work-Focused Health-Related Assessment which is or was a second medical.

How many points do you need to go straight into the support group?

No number of points can get you into the support group. You have to pass the second LCWRA test.

Sorry still getting confused here after reading as Gareth suggested, Dianes husband scored 30 points and is in Work Related Group. on the Descriptors even the 'New propsed ones' I score 30 points straightaway as can't walk, nor selfpropel 30 metres dependant on descriptor used, plus cannot side transfer from wheelchair onto chair or toilet without assisant plus aids so straightaway that is 30 points, but based on Dianes husband scores that would still put me in work related ? A 'dim day' here :(

It's all very confusing, I know.I thought ( maybe wrongly) that if one of the descriptors in the limited capability for work related activities applied then you were put in the support group? If so my hubby should be in the support group, that is what I don't understand. We are going to get advice as I am so confused about it all - many thanks for all those who have tried to explain it!

Hi mistynow

For the LCWRA on page 26 you do not score points. You either pass the test or you don't. If any one descriptor applies to you, you pass the test and qualify for the support group. There is no '15' next to these descriptors.

I presume Diane's husband scored 30 points in the LCWA test (pages 17 to 24), but would have failed the test on page 26.
