ESA Support Group to UC appointee - bank ac and people living with you was created by firvulag
My wife and I have a 29 year old son who is in the income based ESA support group (even since school days) along with DLA (ever since early school days which has just transferred to Social Security Scottish Adult DLA). Both without limit of time. We have been and continue to be enganged with social work to help with his issues and condition.
He lives in our house. His brother also now lives here post covid working remotely room his bedroom. So currently a household of four. We are in early dicussions with social work about where he could live in future as we age / or can no longer cope. But thats for the future.
My wife is his appointee and ever since first appointed the DWP has paid his benefits into her bank account whch we then strictly track into different savings accounts to ensure the money is only used for his benefit with his knowledge. The DWP knew this when she was appointed. Money put to one side for him from this and additional money from us is also covered in our wills to ensure he gets the benefit and support once we are gone (its a lifetime condition).
He has a bank account and savings account (we also have access to) to try teach him how to manage money but hes not able to fully manage it and there have been incidents that have illustrated his vulnerability and hes lost money here. There are good reasons he has an appointee !!
Filling out the form seems straightforward apart from a couple of points.
Bank detiails
We would prefer to continue as we are for now. At some point we may move to a POA separate account model once the future is clearer se next steps with supporters and social work.
The question asks why a different account is used and indicates the claim may take longer to process. Has anyone any real life experiences of this in terms of how they handle this. We could either
a) nominate his account (as we have access anyway)
b) continue as current and explain why further in a journal entry.
We prefer option b but also don't want to be fighting with the DWP - we have enough to deal with day to day. We will move to a different arrangement at some point though just not this year.
People who live in Your House
It talks about "adding them to his claim"
The forms already asked about partner etc (none) and where he lives (with parents / close relatives). So this question is a bit confusing.
On one hand it seems like we should add myself, his Mum and his brother.
But we dont live in his house, he lives in ours (in his old bedroom) . We are not part of his claim and our income or life should not count (thats my understanding).
Not sure what to put here
a) nothing
b) nothing plus journal entry explaining the above
c) list all three of us plud a journal entry explaining the above
What have others done here.
Other Info
We also plan to include the following in a journal entry.
- Some of the boilerplate from the guide re transition and appointees
- Contact details for his social worker and his current medical Consultant.
Best Regards
