ESA50 and medical report form was created by Twentyfold
Please can I ask, is it same points scoring system used for both an ESA WCA (ESA50) and a face-to-face medical health assessment, (medical report form)? Can the resulting ‘points’ from both scenarios be compared equally, ie, like for like? Both appear to use the same descriptors.
And, was the ESA points scoring system the same in 2018 as in 2024? Ie the descriptors.
Thanks

Hi Twentyfold
Yes the points that the Healthcare Professional awards will be via the same determination regardless if the assessment is face to face, telephone or paper based.
The scoring system over the last 7 years would be overall the same apart from changes following legal decisions and Upper Tribunal judgements.

Please can you advise. There has been no change in long term health condition. An ESA medical health assessment in 2018 resulted in 18 points in total (9 for the ‘going out’ descriptor and 9 for the ‘coping with social situations’ descriptor), and placed in the WRAG. (As I understand it from your guide, a person would need to receive 15 points for one of the descriptors to qualify into the support group, and scoring 18 in total does not mean the same thing?) Received only the WRAG rate for 6 years, which caused hardship, but due to mental health issues and no understanding of the process did not query it. Reassessed in 2024, ESA50 WCA, and placed in the support group having scored 15 points in the ‘initiating actions descriptor’. No change in the long term health condition. My question is, could this be queried now with the DWP, after 6 years? As I have obviously scored points for completely different descriptors 6 years apart with no change in condition. And now receive the support group. Thank you.

Hi Twentyfold
I cannot see the DWP asking to re-assess you for 2 or 3 years as there is a 5 year backlog of WCA's. There is also the huge re-organisation of disability Benefits being proposed.
Keep an eye on the News section of BenefitsandWork for the latest changes in disability Benefits.

Thank you for your reply. There has been a misunderstanding however, as it has not answered my question. Apologies but I am not asking when I will be re-assessed in the future.
My question is, could I possibly query now with the DWP (6 years after a decision was made in 2018) whether it is right that back then was scored 9 points in one descriptor and 9 in another - subsequently being placed in the WRAG for 6 years and not the support group - when I have just been re-assessed in 2024 and received 15 points in another descriptor, and placed in the support group? With no change in condition over the 6 years, I cannot understand if this is fair? As it makes no sense to me that points would be scored in different descriptors 6 years apart with no change in condition. Could this be queried? Thank you.

Hi Twentyfold
You are out of time to appeal any decision.
There are two tests to pass when applying for ESA/NSESA, the first test you have to get 15 points or more, the second test you have to fit in one of their descriptor.
Check out our ESA/UC guide for details.
