PIP Q5 Managing your treatments was created by Alpro Cherry
Hello
I wonder if the moderators (or anyone) could advise?

In your guide it says “if you need help with supervision, prompting or assistance to manage medication AND to monitor a health condition, then you should score more than one point ….”

This seems to be contradictory to how the points given are set out, i.e. all of the descriptors regarding aids & appliances, help from another person with medication and help from another person with monitoring a health condition score just one point???

Please could you clarify??
Many thanks

Hi Alpro cherry

Thank you for raising that point. I've read it over and over again as you did, and I think you can only score 1 point, as it says later down the page. Unless one of the other mods comes up with a different interpretation, I'll ask Steve to clarify the wording and how you would score more.

Hi Alpro cherry

Aids and appliances for "Managing treatments

Regulation 2 of the main PIP regulations provides -

“aid or appliance”- (a) means any device which improves, provides or replaces [the claimant's] impaired physical or mental function; and (b) includes a prosthesis;
Regulation 4(2) provides -

[The claimant's] ability to carry out an activity is to be assessed - (a) on the basis of [the claimant's] ability whilst wearing or using any aid or appliance which [the claimant] normally wears or uses; or (b) as if [the claimant] were wearing or using any aid or appliance which [the claimant] could reasonably be expected to wear or use.

Dosette box and alarm would certainly help if you have cognitive or memory issues and hence forget.

Presumably the insulin pen provides the medication hence would not count as an aid. However if you need help to use this you might qualify under need assistance - 3bii
Blood sugar monitoring will probably come under 3biii if you need help to do the monitoring I don't think this is obviously an aid.

If you have any therapy such as home dialysis, nebuliser, tens machine, cpap machine for sleep apnoea or perhaps physio exercises that require a partner's help, or help to put on compression stocking these might come under 3c upwards depending on the amount of time per week required.

Hello Gary
Thank you for this but I’m not sure you saw my original question, which was regarding your guide which states that if you need help with medication AND monitoring a health condition you should score more than one point. This is contradictory to how the points are allocated in that descriptor. Just wanted clarity on that. Not sure where you’re getting information about insulin and blood sugar monitoring?
