Hi, I am in the process of migrating to UC from support group ESA, I also get PIP.
The process seems to have gone ok first payment due 13th feb. But I’ve just had a message in journal that I have a phone appointment on the 4th Feb. Stating Booked- new style esa duel claim.
I have been on benefits for over ten years so my ESA would have been income based not contribution based as far as I understand. So I don’t understand why they have put me in to claim new style esa as everything I can find about it says is a replacement for contribution based esa, ie if you’ve worked and paid stamp in last few years.
Have they made a mistake or am I missing something. I couldn’t find an answer in any topics here hence the new thread. Thank you in advance
Rob

Hi Bob,

When you made your ESA claim mainly years ago you would have been considered for Contributions Based ESA and this it appears was included in your ESA award. You will have received letters regarding ESA over the years and these letters are renown for being confusing even to experienced Benefits advisers.
So now your Conts based ESA is automatically converted to New Style ESA due to UC Managed Migration. But the New Style ESA is basically the same thing as the old Conts based ESA. The only difference is that you need to agree a claimant commitment which can be done over the phone and in your case is just agreeing to inform the DWP of any future changes of circumstances.

Let me know how you get on.

Thank you for your reassuring reply. I went from work to ESA in around 2012. I thought the contributions based ESA had only lasted a relatively short period then converted to income based, hence my surprise.

Hi Bob,

The correct expression is a top up of Income based ESA rather than converting Contribution based to Income based. Just to avoid any misunderstanding.

Hi, so I prepared as much as I could for today’s phone call. He said I had to make a choice whether to have the new style esa or just UC which threw me as was expecting to confirm agreement for esa. I also received a letter from esa stating my payments from them would stay the same (dated 25th jan) and got a payment from esa today £200 odd pounds short of my usual amount. The guy on the phone hadn’t a clue but eventually we figured out this was the basic esa without the transition top up. I pointed out that until I get my message from UC on the 9th telling me the award I don’t know what’s happening and can’t make an informed choice. He scheduled another phone appointment for the 17th. Total omni shambles that I was unprepared for. So I’m super confused really. Will have to wait to see what UC award me but am worried I should have just okayed the esa today but got super flustered.

If he’d said it was a claimant commitment I’d have agreed but he was asking me to make a choice between esa or just UC and was suprised I’d had an esa payment today and now I’m worried they’re stitching me up. On paper they have made a decision to give me ns esa as the letter I received. But this phone call today he had no idea or access to that letter, tbf he was ok but didn’t really listen to me and didn’t know what was going on
