uc migration was created by onestep
So yesterday I completed my online form for myself and my wife's joint application for uc. We currently receive esa (support) and child tax credits. I am the one in the esa support group and my wife does not claim and we live off the child tax credits and my esa. I'm now confused though because my wife has received a text today to say that she has to attend a uc credit meeting at the job centre next week. Is this correct and if so, why is she being summoned? Help please.

Hi onestep,
That appears in the first instance to be correct. Just to confirm that in your UC Migration letter it should have stated which Benefits are ending and in your case it's Income Based ESA and child tax credits.
Unfortunately partners in UC claims ( a UC joint claim ) have to look for work unless they have an exemption due to illness or caring. So that would prompt the question as to your wife caring or being too unwell to work ?

She is too unwell to work she actually has a non cancerous brain tumour which causes her all sorts of problems, she is waiting for surgery. How would the system now work for her? Would it now be a matter of going to the docs once a month/fortnight for notes or is there a way to be transferred onto long term sick similar to the old esa support?

Hi onestep
We would advise you to seek advice from a Welfare Rights Organisation, they will be able to take all your circumstances into account. Yours is a complex case and you do need to get the right advice. advicelocal.uk
The first question I would ask, does your wife do any caring for you? if so you could claim the care element of UC. As you were in the support group of ESA you should be placed in the LCWRA group of UC.
You cannot claim 2 x LCWRA.

Hi onestep
Good question, not one that has been asked before.
Care element and LCWRA element are part of Universal Credit, you do not have to pay Income Tax on. www.gov.uk/income-tax/taxfree-and-taxable-state-benefits
