I was told that if a PIP clamant has a hearing loss and uses hearing aids than this will not get them any points. I have hearing loss and Tinitus and use hearing aids so I would be interested to know the answer to this.

Hi Paul

You have been misinformed. If you have a look at the guide to PIP claims and Reviews and look at the questions on pages 60 (Talking, Listening and Understanding) and 68 (Mixing with Other People) - it particularly mentions hearing difficulties and what you may score.

I have hearing loss and use hearing aids. I scored 2 points under the PIP Daily Living Activity "Communicating verbally" (Activity 7b), because of this. The exact wording of 7b is: "Needs to use an aid or appliance to be able to speak or hear." (2 points).

Hi Biz I returned my 3rd PIP review 2 months ago and whilst reading this post/thread became aware of the hearing aid and points, i was prescribed 2 hearing aids in 2017, my hearing has deteriorated drastically since, i don't wear my aids at home, they disturb me, i very rarely go out, so don't notice hearing, but have to be very close to someone in order to hear.

The few calls i receive i have on speakerphone and next to my ear, so that is ok ish.

I have never mentioned hearing ever in any claim or review, merely thinking it was normal, my fault, i have always informed or put down my roaring tinnitus. I saw a ENT specialist 12 years ago.

My question is what should i do? any advice would be appreciated, I do have a hearing test, in a couple of weeks.
Which i can say my hearing will way done on last test 8 years ago. I am reluctant to mention any changes, as my review was basically no change for all. as retire next year and wanted to try and keep award the same if possible.
Sincerely Clearwater

Hi Clearwater

I can't tell you what to do here. You don't have to talk about your deafness, but if it affects your communication or moving around, you may want to. The issue is, will your hearing difficulties earn you extra points? If it would and you need those points then you may want to mention it. PIP assessors are notoriously bad in my view in understanding the difficulties associated with deafness.
