Responding to invite letter - DLA to PIP?

Well, the dreaded brown envelope has 'landed'.

I turned 65 a month after the April cut off - just a month too young, and I assume that the random selection is starting with the oldest - I am now 67.

My first question is: I have until the end of October to respond but I don't have a telephone as I am hearing and speech impaired and I live alone. I understand from this forum that one can respond by paper on form PIP1, but how do I get one?

Second question: My Motability car is up for renewal in January. It is 5 years old as it has several adaptations - Electronic over ring hand controls, hand brake instead of foot brake etc. Will Motability process my next car application with my DLA to PIP pending.?I am extremely worried as I will be completely housebound without my car.

You have two options in regard making the claim, someone can phone on your behalf but you will need to be present in order to answer the security questions and to authorise the DWP to speak to the person.

Or you can write to the DWP, the address is;

Personal Independence Payment New Claims
Post Handling Site B
Wolverhampton
WV99 1AH

If you write then make sure that the letter is sent by a tracked post and chase the DWP up before the required claim date if you have not heard from them.

As to the car, you'll need to speak to Motability about your options, it may be possible to extend the current lease until a Decision is made on your PIP claim. What you need to be cautious of is paying for adaptions only to find that you do not receive a suitable PIP award, even if you go on to successfully challenge any such Decision, Motability will have no choice but to take the new car back as soon as the Decision is made.

Thanks Gordon, it's such a worrying and stressful time.

It makes one feel as if one is committing a criminal act to be disabled and one needs to be interrogated.

Gordon,

May I follow-up mommaduck’s query?

Like mommaduck and many other members I am uncomfortable with the telephone version of the PIP1. In addition, I always prefer a paper-trail when dealing with the DWP.

I had planned to ask my carer to phone on my behalf to acknowledge the invitation and request a paper PIP1. I’m slightly uncertain now as to the best order of battle:
1. Carer to phone with me following this up with a letter to the address you quote.
2. Just a letter from me.

I don't think it really matters, whatever is most comfortable for you.

It's phone or write, there's no need to do both.

Phoning has the advantage of being quick and you will know that it has been done, but you obviously have to be able to make the call.

A letter will be slower, it can often take post 10 days to get through the DWP's internal mail system to the right department, obviously there will not be the stress of a phone call, but you'll only know that the request to start a claim has been successful when you receive the PIP1, so you will need to do it as soon as you get the invitation and chase it up (this may mean a phone call), if you have not heard before you reach the expiry date.
