Hi everyone
I am a total newbie and very confused. I have never had to claim benefit before and I am blown away by how confusing everything is? I had to leave my job in November 2013 due to illness. I was diagnosed with a condition called episodic cluster headaches, which has totally turned my life upside down. I use oxygen therapy and have to self inject drugs up to 3 times a day and also though the night. In February I was told to go to an assessment centre where I explained my condition and from there I was placed into something called a support group. I rang DWP as I had never heard of this and asked if I needed to continue sending in sick notes and I was told no as I I had peen placed into the support group for 6 months. My claim amount increased to £125.00 per week. Since I went for assessment my condition has worsened and I have just had a new diagnosis from my consultant of chronic cluster headaches ( meaning there is not much chance of any improvement) Does anyone know what I need to do now? I am very worried that my support group entitlement will end and I wont be able to manage financially. There is absolutely no chance of me returning to work as the attacks last up to 2 hours a time?

Welcome to the forum, you might want to have a look at the following FAQ which explain where everything is

Welcome to Benefits and Work

The Support Group is the highest of the two groups for ESA so you don't need to worry about informing the DWP if your condition has deteriorated.

Your claim is indefinite so unless you are re-assessed you will continue to receive your current payments.

If your condition is unlikely to improve in the short to mid term you might want to think about also claiming PIP, have a look at our PIP Claim guide

www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/help-for-claimants/pip

If you have further questions then please reply to this post and we will do our best to help.

Hi Gordon
Thank you for your reply. Its like a minefield! Is there a specific period of time you need to claim ESA in the support group before you can claim PIP? I called the DWP and they say I can not claim PIP until I have been re assessed for ESA support group at the end of my initial awarded ( I was awarded 6 months) they will then need to be satisfied that my case warrants another 6 months in support group. If this is the case I can then apply for PIP. This hardly seems fair?
Thanks
Julie

They should not have told you this, ESA and PIP are separate benefits with separate criteria although there are some limited areas of crossover, providing you met the basic eligibility criteria when you called then your claim should have been accepted.

You can make a claim immediately.

If you have details of when you made the call then I would make a complaint.

Complaining to the DWP

Hi
I am just taking a tentative look at the PIP guidance and I have a few questions. I am hoping you can advise me accordingly. My condition is such that for varying periods I am absolutely fine physically although these good periods can vary from a couple of hours to a number of days. When I am experiencing a particularly bad cluster they can run into days of constant pain. Episodes come and go with no prior warning and are not trigger lead but following a bad episode I am left totally fatigued, confused and unfocussed for quite some time. During an actual attack there is no way I could prepare a meal or dress myself and would not even think about getting a wash and as I said before I can have several attacks through the day. When I am not in the process or aftermath of an episode I am totally fine so I am struggling how to be totally accurate in my answers. Do I base my answers on good or bad days?
The mobility part is also tricky. I have to take portable oxygen everywhere I go and Should I have an attack when I am out I could not navigate my way back home without considerable support. Again fitting into a tick box is difficult and I do not want to mislead.
Some advise before I begin the application would be very welcome.

If the tick boxes don't fit with how you would describe your problems then you can mark them with "see below" and provide an answer in the comments box or any attached pages.

Tasks must be performed reliably and for the majority of days so if you can do this then you should score points, but you will need to explain in detail how you are affected and for how long.

Both these terms are explain in more detail in the guide.
