There is no specific timescale within which a claimant will hear if their claim is being processed on paper only, our understanding is that Maximus are handling claims on a first in first out basis, so it could be some time.
When they get to your file, they will first look at it to decide whether a recommendation can be made without an assessment, if they can then an ESA85A assessment report will be produced from your information, it is at this point that they are most likely to contact your GP, etc., if they are going to at all. Your file is then returned to the DWP for a Decision to be made.
If it is deemed that an assessment is required then an appointment will be booked and you will receive notification of the appointment in writing. You are entitled to 7 days notification but this includes postage time so the effective period may be less.
So the next likely event on your claim will be an invitation for a face to face or a Decision Letter from the DWP.

I called DWP today to find out prognosis period of time, its three years.
Is that maximum time most given?
One thing I noted was that decision was made 22nd Oct, but new payments will not start till end of November.
I questioned this and spoke to three people who could only say 'that's the system'.
Which means they have delayed paying out for long time, as submitted form four months ago.
Should this be challenged?
The old SDA I am on pays £30 a week less then ESA support group, so is saving them money annoyingly.
But at least I have three years of peace on this benefit, although expect DLA to PIP process next.
This year had extensive Care Review, in process of Financial Monitoring for two year period on my Personal Budget and then have assessment for Care charges.
Just seems one torture after another.
So exhausting.
But thankfully I can access support here re benefits.

Three years between assessments is the maximum period the DWP currently allow, so well done.
ESA Decisions on transfers usually take effect up to a couple of weeks after the Decision is actually made, this is done to avoid part payments by having the Decision apply from a payment date, however, if your SDA is paid 4 weekly or monthly then this would result in an extended period of up to 4 weeks.
The effective date is covered by Regulation 13 of the ESA Transitional Regulations.
