Hi Mods,
I have just read your replies re: the above, do you receive a p60 only if you are in receipt of cb- esa
or does it not matter whether it is cb or ib
May be I have misunderstood.

As far as I am aware it only applies to ESA(CB), the P60 is a tax certificate and only ESA(CB) is liable to tax.

Me, as well regarding IR ESA: P60U.
Not the first time, actually. But oddly, only two previously, and not every year either. Odd, that.

My wife and son both received P60's

Wife receives ESA(CB) in Support Group

Son, not in support group,relieves ESA (IR) but also Carers Allowance; I understand that in this case it is the Carers Allowance that is taxable

There are a number of ways that a person on ESA benefit can receive a p60. for example a person in support group may have a combination of ESA(CB) & ESA(IR) the CB would be taxable but IR not.
