PIP Appeal? was created by jords21
Hello.

I'm 25 years old living with Adrenomyeloneuropathy (AMN)
Since having to give my job up as a builder in July 2014 i applied for personal independence payment (PIP)
i received a letter stating i was awarded the standard rate of daily living component but nothing for mobility component even though mobility is my main issue and i endure frequent falls and find it impossible to get up on my own.
I then asked for a mandatory reconsideration backed up with letters from my metabolic consultant and my local GP which stated in the doctors letter that she would be very surprised if i didn't receive the enhanced rate of the mobility component.
The decision this time was that i would be awarded the standard rate for mobility component as well as my previous award of standard daily living component.
i scored 10 points for moving around (can move more than 20 metres but no more than 50 metres) even though i can fall after a few steps. My argument is about planning and following a journey.
They awarded me 0 points for this as they stated i can drive a car and manage my incontinence problems by urination- but this is not always possible when in traffic or urban areas. Due to this i have had frequent accidents in my car, so i have to go home and clean my self up, abandoning the journey all together. Very embarrassing and time consuming. Should i write this in more detail if i appeal? Don't know what to do, i have got nobody to compare myself with as to what payments they are getting?

Thanks

Welcome to the forum

The primary intention of the Going Out Descriptor is take account of the problems that claimants with mental health or cognitive issues have with going out, planning a route and following it. I Cannot state categorically that you cannot score points in the circumstances that you describe, but I believe it very unlikely that you would.

Please have a look at our PIP Claim guide for more information about this and the Moving Around Descriptor. You should also have a look at our PIP MR & Appeal Guide if you want to take the matter further. See

Hello Gordon
Thanks for your reply and the information you provided which I am stressfully looking through.
I can't plan and follow a journey due to my incontinence. It takes me double the time of a normal person having to go back home and use the toilet. Even worse, I've had accidents when ive not been able to find a toilet or secluded spot when I'm out. I'm very worried about mentioning this as I did score 2 points on the daily living component for incontinence (have tried using a bottle with no success).
I am frightened pip will take the 2 points from my daily living to up my mobility to the enhanced rate, meaning I would be worse off. Don't know which way to turn, haven't received any help I've previously asked for from CAB and MS centre as they didn't know. Just need some guidance.
Thanks

I am sorry, but we cannot help you make a decision about you appeal, this is something that only you can decide to do or not. Can a Tribunal remove points from your existing award, yes, but it in most cases they do not, if either of your current awards is threatened, the Judge must warn you and offer you the opportunity to withdraw your appeal.
