Hi All

I'm in the ESA WRAG group and claim for my partner and children. My better half has recently started to experience severe knee and joint pain , leaving her unable to get up un aided or walk very far unaided , she has to lay on the floor with her legs out straight , as sitting on the settee or anywhere that she has to have her knees bent causes her excruciating pain. When she walks she is like a little old lady hobbling along very slowly :(
My Question should she put in a claim for ESA or PIP ? On doing this would it effect my ESA ? ie stop it because the claim is in my name , is she allowed to claim ESA as well as me ? My anxiety level is going through the roof worrying that it might somehow stop my esa etc and put us back on the assessment rate :(
Sorry for the long winded explanation  Thanks Steve

Welcome to the forum

In case you are not aware, your real name appears to be showing in the forum, if you want to change this then follow the instructions in the following FAQ

My full name is showing, how can I stop it?

If you are already claiming Income Related ESA then your wife would only be able to make a claim if she was eligible for Contribution Based ESA, this would be dependant on her having sufficient NI Contributions during the Tax Years 2012-13 and 2013-14. Only one person in a couple can claim an Income Related Benefit.

If she is able to claim ESA(CB) then it will be deducted from your ESA(IR) £ for £ but if she is placed in the Support Group then you would receive the Enhanced Disability Premium which would increase the amount you receive.

Her claiming PIP will have no direct affect on your ESA, but an award may result in you receiving additional Premiums.

Your wife applying for ESA or PIP will not result in your ESA being stopped or you being put back onto the Assessment rate.

Have a look at our ESA and PIP guides to get a better understanding of whether your wife would qualify for an award.
