Carers Allowance..............again was created by Rubyred
Help needed from you wise people who understand benefits better than me.

I work full time and receive PIP standard care and mobility.

My hubby receives DLA higher mobility, zero care, he also receives ESA SG.

Can he claim carers allowance for me or vice versa? I read conflicting stories about this so just need to understand it better.

Thank you

In principle your husband can claim Carers Allowance for you as you are receiving PIP Daily Living.

You cannot claim CA for your husband as he has no Care award.

Whether he is eligible for payment will depend on what type of ESA he receives and your personal circumstances.

If he receives ESA(CB) then he will not be paid for the CA as the two benefits are classed as overlapping and as a consequence only the ESA(CB) will be paid.

If he receives ESA(IR), either in full or as a top-up to his ESA(CB) then the CA will be paid, but treated as income and deducted from the ESA(IR) £ for £ meaning that there is no net change to your payments, however, the Carers Premium will also become payable and will be added to his ESA(IR) increasing it by £34.20.

If he is on ESA(CB) and does not currently receive ESA(IR) then it would be worth checking whether you are eligible, as in addition to the CA Premium he should be entitled to the Enhanced Disability Premium for being in the Support Group. Eligibility for ESA(IR) is dependant on your household income, assets and savings and any hours that a partner works.

Asset rule for ESA(IR)

24 hour work rule for ESA(IR)

One of my colleagues has just pointed out that your post says you work full time  less haste, more speed and accuracy.

This being the case, then your husbands ESA must be on ESA(CB) and he won't be entitled to an ESA(IR) top-up.

Bottom line, he won't be able to claim CA.
