Whether you are asked to claim PIP or not will depend on whether you are in an active PIP postcode at the time of your renewal. See
www.gov.uk/government/publications/pip-postcode-map-uk
If you already are then you will definitely move to PIP, if you are not currently then I would expect you to be invited providing that your postcode is activated at least 20 weeks before your DLA renews.
If it is not and is not activated more than 20 weeks before your DLA renewal then I would expect you to receive a DLA renewal.
If you are invited to claim PIP then you will receive a notification letter approximately 20 weeks in advance of your DLA award ending, you will have four weeks to apply for PIP, if you fail to do so then your DLA will be suspended and you will be given a further four weeks to apply for PIP, if at that point you have not applied for PIP then your DLA claim will be closed.
Once you have applied for PIP you will be sent a PIP2 form to complete with details of your day to day limitations, how to complete this and more details about the process are available in our PIP Claim guide
www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/help-for-claimants/pip
There are considerable delays in the system, but these are primarily concentrated in the assessment process and to a lesser extent in the time for a Decision to be made.
It is essential that DLA claimants with a fixed term award monitor this situation, as your current award will end if it is not extended by the DWP.

My motability car ends on Feb 7th, and they have said that I can have an extra six months, but that still doesn't take me up to September the 9th.

I am afraid there is no published "plan" which identifies which postcodes will be activated next, all I can suggest is that you check the postcode map regularly.

I haven't checked a diary but that sounds about right, the DWP may apply a period longer than 20 weeks, in other words the postcode may need to be active some weeks prior to the 22nd, but they should not reduce the 20 week period.
