DLA to PIP - No Entitlement to PIP was created by crystaltips
Ive been on IB and DLA for a few years now for depression and anxiety. I recently submitted my forms for the transfer from IB to ESA and DLA to PIP. After having a medical for ESA I am being transferred from IB to the ESA support group (thanks for your help here in that!). However, I have also now had a reply for my application for PIP and they said Im not entitled to PIP from 24th December 2013 as I don't meet the criteria for PIP.

It seems that its Q13 that has made them come to this conclusion, as in the letter they have put the following assessment of my answer to this:

"Planning and Following Journeys:- You need prompting from another person to undertake a journey to avoid causing you significant mental distress. This gives you a score of 4."

I need significantly more than "prompting" and am writing an appeal letter with the help of your guides.

I am making it clear that I never undertake unfamiliar journeys on my own and, even if someone accompanies me, I never drive to unfamiliar places as I get very anxious and distressed. My question is this, should I qualify what Im telling them with an example of something that happened recently? That is, we had a beloved dog that was extremely ill and our local vet couldn't help her. He referred her to a specialist centre in Birmingham as they were the only people that could help her. (She was insured so the cost didn't come into it.) However, I simply could not undertake this journey either alone or accompanied. My son-in-law had to take us. He knows the m6 well and had no problem driving my daughter and I with our little dog. My point being that even knowing that it was a life or death situation for our dog, I couldn't do this journey.

Is this too much waffle to include in my appeal letter or should I tell them about this?

Hi ct,

See Gordon's post : Here.

So you would have to show that the "prompting" was necessary to avoid "overwhelming psychological distress"

"b. Needs prompting to be able to undertake any journey to avoid overwhelming psychological distress to the claimant"

We all know that pets are very precious to their owners.

Your suggestion may well be a good example of your limitations, and there would be no harm in citing it. After all, it is a true event.

It all depends on whether the DWP PIP DM, accepts it as a good indication of your limitations with regards to the particular wording of the descriptor.

You should be aware that if you suffer other limitations that would bar you from being able to care, look after, exercise a pet, that assumptions may be made from the fact that you have a pet.

If you do have such limitations, it may be a good idea to add comments regarding who looks after/exercises your pet.

If anything, pets reduce anxiety. However, my daughter is at home most of the day and can take care of things.

Hi ct,

I would certainly agree with your comments regarding pets being efficacious to their owners wellbeing. :)

However, you should be aware that assumptions may be made from the fact that you own a pet. (As they are with The ESA WCA)

That is why I highlighted this issue.
