Hi

Just a quick question re the news about dvla. We are about to take delivery of an xc60 which for the first year is tax free, we have purchased it, so will people think that it's a mobility car? There are, as everywhere, people who will be looking at it and jumping to conclusions. It would be better on dvla if it just stated that the tax was up to date?

Hi M,

I assume that you are referring to are latest update to this issue :

www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/news/2872-dvla...-neighbours-benefits

If the first year's Road Tax is free as part of the agreement to buy the car, you can simply tell the truth if any one asks.

If the dealership has paid it, it will show up as paid.

As from 01/10/14, paper Road Tax discs are defunct so you would not need to display one after then.

I do not know what would come up on the online "Vehicle Information" facility, you would have to check.

www.gov.uk/get-vehicle-information-from-dvla

Purely in passing, the paper part of your driving license will be defunct also from Jan 2015:

Sorry this sounded condescending, that I have something against mobility cars, have difficulty in saying what I mean, because if I could have had a mobility car I would have.

What I'm trying to say is that tax free could be for other reasons, and with new low emissions more vehicles would come into this category.

Is that clear?

Don't worry M,

I didn't think that you came across as condescending in your first post. :)

I understand that you were trying to clarify that it was not a Motability lease car.

Yes, you are correct, with it being a brand new car, if it falls within the right class for "low emissions" then it could come under the Nil Rate £0.00 Road Taxation class.
